Copyright and FTP

Copyright is the right to a person's creative works. Copyright protects someone's work from being republished by someone else claiming it as their own. In 2000, the DMCA (Digital Millennium Copyright Act) was passed, protecting works on the Internet and such.

FTP is File Transfer Protocol. This is the act of uploading and downloading files to the Internet. FTP is used for publishing websites as well, and for many other things that might require being put on the Internet or shared via.

  1. .exe: File extension for a program, executable.
  2. .txt: The file extension used for a document containing text. Very fast download containing no graphics.
  3. .zip: A compressed file. Used to transfer files from one computer to another.
  4. Compression: The process of making computer data smaller. The information takes up less disk space and may be transmitted in less time.
  5. Hexidecimal: A colour chart made of a combination of letters and numbers. Requires 6.
  6. PDF: A file format developed by Adobe. Doesn't require a specific software to open.
  7. Folder: The subdivision or sub-directory used to organize your files.
  8. Multimedia: The presentation of information using animation, sound, graphics and text
  9. .docx: The file extension for a Microsoft Word document versions 2007 & 2010.
  10. .doc: The file extension for a Microsoft Word document versions 2003 and earlier.
  11. License Agreement: A legal contract between the user and the copyright owner of the software or program.
  12. Digital Millennium Copyright Act: Passed completely in the year 2000, protects digital information, images, programs, etc.

Hotspot - "A hotspot is a site that offers Internet access over a wireless local area network through the use of a router connected to a link to an Internet service provider."
Interactive - "Computer program, device, game, etc., that (in response to a user's action or request) presents choices (paths) depending on where in the program the user initiated the action."
Vortal - "An Internet site that provides a directory of links to information related to a particular industry"
Portal - "a web site that brings information from diverse sources in a unified way. Usually, each information source gets its dedicated area on the page for displaying information (a portlet); often, the user can configure which ones to display."
Intranet - "A local or restricted communications network, esp. a private network created using World Wide Web software."
Internet - "a vast computer network linking smaller computer networks worldwide"
Rollover - "A graphic element in an application or on a Web page that changes its color or shape when the pointer is moved (rolled) over it."
Packets - "the unit of data that is routed between an origin and a destination on the Internet or any other packet-switched network."
